Empowering Young Voices

Our Mission

To inspire, educate, and empower Detroit youth through hands-on media arts training, mentorship, and access to professional tools and environments that foster creativity, critical thinking, and real-world skills in journalism, broadcasting, and digital storytelling.

About Young Voices Media Lab

Target Audience

Youth ages 13–18 in the Detroit area, with a focus on students from underrepresented communities who have an interest in media, technology, and storytelling.

Program Goals

  1. Introduce participants to media production skills, including video, audio, photography, and writing.
  2. Cultivate storytelling abilities with an emphasis on local history, community engagement, and personal expression.
  3. Provide mentorship from experienced media professionals.
  4. Foster teamwork, leadership, and digital literacy.
  5. Encourage exploration of media careers and support educational pathways in media arts.

Program Structure

 Pilot Duration: 8-week session

  • Frequency: 1 session per week (2 hours each)
  • Participants: 10–12 youth in the first cohort

Location: WGPR Museum media lab/studio space 

Young Voices Media Lab is:
